Your First PCS, Your Own Truck

A PPM move for your first PCS can pay, but only if the weight tickets, the advance, and the 45 day claim deadline are handled in order.

Published October 25, 2026

A PPM move for your first PCS sounds simple when someone explains it in the hallway: move your own stuff, get paid for the weight, keep what you do not spend. The version that actually happens has more paperwork than that hallway version, and the paperwork is where first timers lose money. Not on the truck. Not on the gas. On the weight tickets and the claim deadline, two things that are easy to get right exactly once, at the right moment, and annoying to fix later.

Start with the allowance, because it sets the ceiling on everything. A junior enlisted member without dependents, grades E-1 through E-4, has a household goods weight allowance of 5,000 pounds. With dependents it is 8,000 pounds. A first PCS from the barracks usually does not come close to 5,000 pounds, and that is fine. The payment is based on the weight you actually move, up to the allowance, not on the allowance itself. Moving 2,800 pounds of real household goods beats inventing weight you do not have, and the scales at the weigh station will tell the truth either way.

The weight tickets are the whole claim, so treat them that way. You need an empty weight ticket and a full weight ticket for the loaded truck, from a certified scale, with the truck weighed the same way both times, same fuel level, same people out of the truck. The difference between those two numbers is your net weight, and your payment is built on it. Lose a ticket and you are reconstructing a move from receipts and memory, which is a bad place to be. Photograph both tickets the day you get them and email the photos to yourself. Paper fades. Your inbox does not.

Money timing matters more on a first move than on a fifth, because a junior enlisted bank account does not have much slack. You can request an advance of up to 60 percent of the estimated incentive before you move, and that advance is what pays for the truck, the gas, and the boxes without putting it all on a credit card. The rest comes after the claim is settled, and settlement takes weeks, not days. Keep every receipt anyway, even though the PPM payment itself is not a line by line reimbursement. The receipts decide the taxable part of the incentive at tax time, because your operating expenses reduce the taxable amount. No receipts, no reduction.

The deadline is the part nobody mentions until it is too late. The PPM claim has to be filed within 45 days after the move is complete. Put that date in your phone the day you arrive, not the week you get around to it. Inprocessing, housing, and a new job will eat the first month without trying. File once, file complete, with both weight tickets, the counseling paperwork, and the receipts in one packet. A first PCS PPM done right is genuinely good money for work you were doing anyway. Done sloppy, it is a lesson you pay for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the household goods weight allowance for junior enlisted?

Grades E-1 through E-4 without dependents are allowed 5,000 pounds; with dependents the allowance is 8,000 pounds. PPM payment is based on weight actually moved, up to the allowance.

How much advance can you get on a PPM move?

You can request an advance of up to 60 percent of the estimated incentive before the move, to cover the truck, fuel, and packing costs.

Why do PPM weight tickets matter so much?

The difference between the certified empty and full weight tickets is your net weight, and the payment is built on it. Without both tickets the claim is hard to prove.

How long do you have to file a PPM claim?

The claim must be filed within 45 days after the move is complete. Missing that deadline risks the whole settlement.
